Fort Pocahontas
(2)
Fort Pocahontas is a historic Civil War fortification located at Wilson's Landing on the James River in Charles City, Virginia. Established during the May 24, 1864, land and naval action at Wilson's Wharf, it was the site of the first major clash involving U.S. Colored Troops under the command of Brigadier General Edward A. Wild.
After its abandonment in June 1865, the site remained largely untouched until it was purchased by Harrison Ruffin Tyler in 1996, who has since dedicated efforts to preserve and interpret the fort. Today, Fort Pocahontas continues to engage the public through guided tours and annual reenactments, supported by a private foundation of the Tyler family.
