Maggie J. Bale

Dr. Colonna specializes in Acute Care Surgery which is composed of Trauma Surgery, Emergency General Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care. His clinical practice includes the University Hospital SICU and the University Trauma and Emergency Surgery (UTES) service. Dr. Colonna also has a General Surgery Clinic focused on basic general surgical pathology with a special interest in complex abdominal wall hernias. He is originally from South Carolina and completed his General Surgery Residency at East Tennessee State University. He went on to complete Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowships at Wake Forest University. After a brief detour in private practice, Dr. Colonna joined the faculty at the University of Utah in 2012. Dr. Colonna has been Army Reservist since 2003 and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He has completed multiple deployments to the Middle East to serve as a trauma surgeon taking care of the combat wounded, most recently to Iraq in 2023-2024 where he served as Trauma Medical Director for Operation Inherent Resolve. Dr. Colonna has a focus on medical education, having previously directed the MS-3 and MS-4 surgery clerkships, and is the program director of the SCC/ACS fellowships. His research interests include cost-effectiveness analysis, educational research with a focus on simulation, and acute care surgery/trauma. Dr. Colonna is the inaugural Emergency Surgery Medical Director and is working toward EGS verification by the American College of Surgeons. Finally, he serves has the chair of the Utah State COT.

Dr.Kunkel received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, and completed his internal medicine residency and rheumatology fellowships at the University of Utah. Dr. Kunkel joined the faculty in 2004 in the Division of Rheumatology and is currently an associate professor of medicine. He is seeing patients at both the University Hospital and VA Medical Center, and has a clinical and research interest in the causes of, detection of (in particular with the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound), and treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Dr.Kunkel has published several articles in the peer reviewed medical literature, and is a member of the American College of Rheumatology and the Ultrasound School of North American Rheumatologists.

Dr. Brickley completed her medical degree at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. She completed her pediatric residency at the UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and stayed on to complete an additional year as a Chief Resident of the program.Dr. Brickley is currently an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Utah in the Division of General Pediatrics. She sees patients both at the University Pediatric Clinic and the Sugar House Health Center. She additionally spends half of her time working as a developmental pediatrician in the University Developmental Assessment Clinics. Her interests include child development and adolescent medicine. Her goals are to understand each child’s unique developmental journey and to foster support for patients and families in order to help them reach their greatest potential.
