Ignacio Rua, M.D., FACS, FSVS, is a board-certified general and vascular surgeon at Baptist Health Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute. He has vast experience in general and vascular surgery and treats the entire spectrum of vascular diseases. His clinical interests include open, endovascular and hybrid treatment approaches to complex aortic disease as well as thoracic outlet syndrome. A fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the Society for Vascular Surgery, Dr. Rua is also a Board member and a member of several other professional organizations. Dr. Rua earned his medical degree at Cornell University Medical College in New York City. He completed an internship and a residency in general surgery at Strong Memorial Hospital, University of Rochester, in Rochester, N.Y. His clinical training includes a hepatobiliary fellowship at Hospital 12 de Octubre in Madrid, Spain, where he gained specialty training in hepatic resection and liver transplantation surgery. He also completed an endovascular fellowship at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. His patient-centered approach ensures that diagnostic tests are properly utilized to make informed decisions about a patient’s diagnosis and treatment. When determining the best treatment option, Dr. Rua minimizes invasive procedures and prioritizes nonsurgical options like medication, physical therapy and lifestyle modifications before considering surgery. When a patient does have surgery, he collaborates with the healthcare team to develop a timely and effective hospital discharge plan that promotes healing and recovery. Dr. Rua is fluent in English and Spanish. When he is not treating patients, he enjoys playing tennis, golf, chess and going water skiing and snow skiing.
