Haiku No Niwa
Haiku No Niwa is an elegant Japanese Haiku garden located on the west side of the Bainbridge Public Library, a tribute created by the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community. This garden honors their ancestors, many of whom were removed from the island and interned during World War II, reflecting a deep commitment to preserving their heritage.
The development of Haiku No Niwa involved significant contributions from community members, including fundraising and planning by Wayne Nakata, as well as design coordination by Junkoh Harui, Viki McCabe, and Doug Tanaka. The garden serves as a peaceful and beautiful space that encapsulates the cultural history and resilience of the Japanese American community on Bainbridge Island.
