History

Originally housing the University Art Museum, later named the Archer M. Huntington Gallery in 1980, and then the Jack S. Blanton Museum of Art in 1998; the Visual Arts Center has a storied history on The University of Texas at Austin's campus as a site for collaboration, research, and education in the arts. The Blanton's collections remained on view in the VAC location until 2005, when they closed down the exhibition space to prepare for the move into their current location at MLK and Congress in 2006. In 2007, the University began work with internationally renowned San Antonio-based architecture firm Lake | Flato to create an innovative renovation of the Art Building and gallery. Today you see the results of the renovation, including a previously covered vaulted ceiling in the galleries that has been restored to its former glory as a visual signature for the VAC.
