Discover the story of this region — from the earliest residents of the Black Hills, to the creation of the deepest gold mine in the Northern Hemisphere, to the search for the secrets of the universe at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF). Engaging exhibits, family-friendly activities, and casual conversations with our knowledgeable staff can bring the underground research to you. From the observation deck, view the expansive Open Cut. Snap a selfie in the Davis Ring, a piece of a Nobel Prize-winning experiment. Marvel at the suspended sculpture of the vast sub-surface passages. Step inside an authentic cage for a virtual ride to the underground. During the summer of 2024, access to the southern Black Hills along US Highway 385 may be limited.
