William Rainey Holt Historical Marker in Lexington, NC commemorates Dr. William Rainey Holt, a prominent figure in North Carolina’s history. Graduating from the University of North Carolina in 1817, Dr. Holt was not only a physician but also a strong advocate of scientific agriculture. He established his residence, known as “The Homestead,” in 1834, which remains as the oldest standing home in Lexington.
Dr. Holt’s plantation, “Linwood,” located southwest of town, served as a model scientific farm where he implemented advanced agricultural techniques. With 1,600 acres under cultivation, sizable livestock herds, and nearly a hundred slaves by 1860, Dr. Holt was at the forefront of promoting improved farming practices such as fertilization and the use of modern implements. Visitors, including notable historians and agriculturists, were drawn to “Linwood” to witness his pioneering methods.
