Beautiful place and we were able to see people coming in that had been canoeing. The rangers are all very genuinely friendly. Really enjoyed the different footprints of animals around the visitor...

The Camp Host at the RV section shows up at my rv door about an hour into getting set up. I open the door thinking it's my people and this dude about gets his face ripped off by a Belgian...

We just finished up a 4 night camping trip to New River State park. We camped in the RV section of the campground, so my review is based off of this section. I did not check out the tent section....

Great staff, Matt was very helpful and knowledgeable and even stayed late to let us in. Haven't seen it in the daylight, but sure is quiet and beautiful at night.

Hickory Parks & Recreation

Nestled in Hickory's historic Claremont neighborhood, McComb Park's combination of sunny open spaces and shaded benches make it a nice choice for a picnic or a relaxing escape. Within the park, the Beaver Memorial Garden includes a water fountain, a gazebo and well-maintained flowerbeds to create a space for quiet contemplation.Parking and public transportation at McComb ParkThe Hickory Metro's Greenway Public Transportation system serves nearby Lenoir-Rhyne University, but the park is best accessible by personal automobile, bicycle or foot. There are not any designated parking areas, but free, on-street space is available around the park's circumference. One paved walkway makes the park handicapped accessible, but most of the park and garden either has a grass or pebble surface.Best and worst time to visit McComb Park The park is open year-round, but it is most enjoyable during the warm weather when seasonal flowers and trees are in bloom. The park is a popular destination on the weekends during wedding, prom and graduation season thanks to the picturesque appeal of the natural environment. On most occasions, the park's spaces are vacant, but weekends during those busy periods often attract a crowd.Admission to McComb ParkThere is no charge to enjoy McComb Park throughout the year. The space can be reserved for weddings or special events through the city of Hickory ($35-80 + deposit).Must see/do at McComb ParkBring your camera and/or a photographer. The flowers, fountain and foliage create a great backdrop for special-occasion pictures or portraits. Spend a few minutes searching out the artistically painted benches scattered in shady spots throughout the park. Each was created by a different artist and they offer unique messages for park visitors.Other places to visit near McComb ParkMcComb Park is a short walk from the SALT Block, which includes Hickory Museum of Art, the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library and the Catawba Science Center. The park is also near the campus of Lenoir-Rhyne University.Insider tip for visitors to McComb ParkAn evening visit during warm weather months opens the door for catching fireflies in the grassy playspaces. Be on the lookout for wildlife - a small stream splitting the park is filled with crawdads and other water life. This makes it appealing to raccoons and other animals, especially in the late afternoon and early evening hours.Author's bio: Michael Willard is a resident of the Hickory, N.C., Metro, where he contributes to local, regional and statewide print and broadcast media.
