Dr. Gianpiero D. Palermo is a Professor of Embryology in Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Blavatnik Family Professor of Reproductive Medicine at The Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine of Weill Cornell Medical College. He received his B.Sc. from Lyceum “Vincenzo Lilla” in Franacavilla, Fontana, Italy; received his medical degree from the Universityof Bari in Bari, Italy; and received his Ph.D. in Reproduction and Developmentfrom Monash University in Clayton, Victoria, Australia. He completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology and his Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. He is board-certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He is a member of both the American Society of Reproductive Medicine as well as the European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology. Furthermore, he has been the Director of Assisted Fertilization and Andrology at The Ronald O. Perelman and Claudia Cohen Center for Reproductive Medicine since 1993.Dr. Palermo was the first to describe intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a solution to complete and unexpected fertilization failure with in vitro fertilization and male factor infertility, in 1992. Since then, it has become the most utilized assisted reproductive technology in the world.Dr. Palermo lectures both nationally and internationally and has authored or co-authored over 150 peer-reviewed manuscripts, over 30 book chapters, multiple textbooks, and over 440 abstracts presented at congresses across the world.
