In contrast to the traditional medical model based on the treatment of illness, a recovery model is based on the goals, preferences, interests and strengths of the individual. Recovery is defined as the personal process of overcoming the negative impact of a mental illness, despite its continued presence. Individuals who are in recovery from mental illness move from a state of dependency to interdependency, and live from a perspective of hope. The recovery process is determined by the you, and the clinician serves as a coach/consultant to the you. With the your input, you' to develop a recovery plan. Focus is on the client's strengths, on the interventions which will facilitate his/her recovery, and on the resources which will support the recovery process. Very important among the resources are family and friends, as identified by and with the permission of the client, who can provide support.
