In contrast to the traditional medical model based on the treatment of illness, a recovery model is based on the goals, preferences, interests and strengths of the individual. Recovery is defined as the personal process of overcoming the negative impact of a mental illness, despite its continued presence. Individuals who are in recovery from mental illness move from a state of dependency to interdependency, and live from a perspective of hope.
