Guided Underground Tours -- A certified Michigan State Historical Landmark. This fascinating tour is family fun and educational too!! You won't forget the experience of visiting the Iron Mountain Iron Mine with skilled guides who take you through 2600 feet of underground drifts and tunnels to 400 feet below the earth's surface to see an amazing underground, lighted cavern giving you a close up view of strange geological formations. Watch tour guides operate mining machinery that was used over 100 years ago. Ride the underground mine train into the tunnel and walk approximately 2 city blocks to see the reality of iron ore mining. Over 21 million tons of iron ore was taken from this mine during 1877 to 1945. Visitors are given rain coats and hard hats before the tour begins. The temperature of the mine is a crisp 43 degrees, so a sweater or jacket is recommended along with closed covered shoes.
