Kay Li, MD
Dr. Qing Kay Li is a professor of pathology and oncology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include surgical pathology and cytopathology. Dr. Li received her medical degree from Tianjin Medical University, and completed her pathology resident training at Albany Medical College, surgical pathology fellowship at University Hospital of Cleveland, and cytopathology fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospital. She also had a Ph.D. and cell biology fellowship training at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Li is also a faculty member and co-PI at the Johns Hopkins Biomarker Discovery Center, and NIH/NCI Clinical Proteomic Tumor Analysis Consortium (CPTAC). Her research interests focus on the application of advanced cellular and molecular techniques to the field of cytopathology and cancer biology, particularly in the field of proteogenomic characterization of lung, stomach and prostate cancer. Dr. Li serves as editorial board member and associated editors for several journals, committee member of the American Society of Cytopathology, and study sections of government agents and private organizations. She has more than 140 publications, including book chapters and books. Her work has been presented at many national/international meetings.
Sandeep Wontakal, MD
Dr. Sandeep Wontakal is an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Genetic Medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He serves as the Director of Clinical Pathology at JHBMC, overseeing the clinical core laboratory and blood bank. In addition, he is a member of the JH Genomics and the DNA Diagnostics Laboratory, where he reviews germline genetic and genomic testing. Sandeep has clinical expertise in genomic testing of rare inherited diseases.Sandeep grew up in New York City and is a proud product of the NYC public school system. He received his B.A. in Molecular Biology & Biochemistry with minors in Mathematics and Philosophy from Rutgers University. He subsequently enrolled in the M.D./Ph.D. program at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where his Ph.D. thesis focused on understanding transcriptional regulation of erythropoiesis. He obtained clinical training in Clinical Pathology and subspecialization training in Molecular Genetic Pathology at New York Presbyterian Hospital - Columbia University Irving Medical Center, where he also served as Chief Resident. After completing his clinical training, he pursued post-doctoral training working with C. elegans to model and better understand the molecular consequences of rare variants identified in patients. His research group continues to utilize model organisms to better understand the functional consequences of rare human variants.
Zahra Maleki, MD
Dr. Zahra Maleki is an associate professor of pathology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Her areas of clinical expertise include surgical pathology and cytopathology. Her priority as a clinician and pathologist is to serve the patients by performing both fine needle aspirations and on site evaluations of specimen adequacy, and providing an accurate, timely diagnosis. She teaches and mentors fellows, residents, and students at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.She received her medical degree from Shaheed Beheshti University of Medical Sciences and completed a residency in anatomic and clinical pathology at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine. She performed her first fellowship at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine in pathology and a second fellowship in cytopathology at the University of Miami.Dr. Maleki's research interests include head/neck and lung neoplasms. She is investigating the role of human papilloma virus (HPV) in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas.She has published papers in surgical pathology and cytopathology.
