The Maine Aquaculture Innovation Center (MAIC) was established in 1988 by the Maine Legislature to promote the development of economically and environmentally sustainable aquaculture opportunities in Maine. Through innovative research, educational resources, and support for strategic alliances, MAIC aims to enhance public visibility and acceptance of aquaculture while driving the commercialization of aquaculture research.

MAIC manages two incubator facilities in partnership with the University of Maine, providing business development services to tenants and facilitating projects that address challenges within the aquaculture industry. Their initiatives include pioneering GIS for shellfish site selection, developing training programs, and conducting market research to assess consumer preferences regarding products from sustainable aquatic systems.
