Fort Popham State Historic Site in Phippsburg, Maine, preserves a Civil War-era coastal defense fortification at the mouth of the Kennebec River. Built from granite blocks quarried on nearby islands, the fort features a 30-foot-high wall facing the river and was originally designed to mount 42 heavy guns.

Throughout its history, Fort Popham saw garrisoning during the American Civil War, Spanish American War, and World War I. The fort's armament included Rodman guns and Parrott rifles, with one cannon donated to a nearby town to honor Civil War soldiers who died in battle.
