The Freedom Rock, established in 1999 and located in rural Iowa, is a large boulder that is repainted annually to honor the nation's veterans. Artist Ray Bubba Sorensen II, inspired by the film "Saving Private Ryan," dedicates his time and effort to create unique murals that express gratitude for military service, supported by donations from the community.
In addition to the original Freedom Rock, Sorensen has initiated a project to establish a Freedom Rock in each of Iowa's 99 counties, with plans to expand the concept nationwide through the 50 State Freedom Rock Tour. His work not only celebrates veterans but also fosters a sense of community and remembrance across small towns in Iowa and beyond.
