Founded in 1986 outside of Carlisle, Iowa, Animal Lifeline of Iowa (ALI) is Central Iowa’s sole special needs, no-kill animal shelter, boasting close to 40 years of dedicated service to Des Moines and all of Iowa. ALI specializes in rescuing cats and dogs with a range of challenges: from injuries, handicaps, and serious medical conditions, to abuse, pregnancy, nursing, and orphaned bottle-fed babies.
The shelter commits to rehabilitating these at-risk animals, who would face a higher likelihood of euthanasia in conventional shelter environments, before placing them in caring forever homes. Notably, animals are not put down based on their length of stay. ALI’s mission revolves around reducing the euthanization of special needs pets by providing essential care, temporary shelter, and promoting responsible, long-term pet ownership.
