Founded in 1847, the American Medical Association is one of the largest associations of physicians and medical students in the United States. It also publishes a list of physician specialty codes that are a standard method in the U.S. for identifying physician and practice specialties. The American Medical Association offers funds for several awareness projects about health literacy. In addition, it operates the American Medical Association Alliance, which is one of the largest organizations that represents the medical industry in the United States. The association offers legislative advocacy support for physician issues, publications and resources to support community health initiatives. The American Medical Association operates the Litigation Center, which is an unincorporated association that enhances the policies of the association through the American legal system, including courts, administrative agencies and alternative dispute bodies.
