Practice and teaching by the Nichiren Shu denomination of Buddhism, based on chanting Odaimoku, expressed in the words "Nam Myoho Renge Kyo“ which, translated from Sanskrit into English, means “Devotion to the Wonderful Truth of the Lotus Flower Teaching.” Services held weekdays 7 AM and Weekly at 10 AM The only buddhist temple with its own lotus flower pond to hold a festive and meaningful participatory annual summer floating lantern ceremony for the recently departed. Incorporated in 1914 in the Territory of Hawaii as a religious, non-profit organization and relocated to Nuuanu Valley from School Street in 1957. Columbarium niches for members to honor ancestors. Jizo Bosatsu Statue to protect travelers, pregnant women, & children. Built in 2000, temple was designed by architect Thomas Katsuyoshi. Built in 1918, 2-story administrative building was designed by E. A. P. Newcomb for Charles Atherton Cooke. Japanese style garden & pond designed by Kiyoshi Nakano.

This summer was SO hot. The Bon Dances, even at night were also pretty hot. The Nichiren Mission Bon Dance was tolerable in the summer heat because Nuuanu is cooler than other parts of the island....
