Maria Celeste Ruiz Holgado, MD

Dr. Parilla is a physician in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He joined the hospital staff in 2015.Dr. Parilla earned his medical degree from Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, West Indies. He trained in pediatrics at SUNY Albany Medical College/Albany Medical Center Hospital in New York, where he also served as pediatric chief resident. He then completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. Dr. Parilla’s clinical interests include diagnosis, monitoring, and intensive care management of disease, conditions, injuries and after-effects of surgery in pediatric patients, which may result in organ system dysfunction or failure.

Dr. Dean is a critical care medicine physician and division chief of Pediatric Critical Care at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. He joined the hospital staff in 2021.He was most recently associate division chief of Critical Care Medicine, Clinical Operations, at Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and an associate professor in the Department of Pediatrics at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Science.He earned his medical degree at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He completed an internship in pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital/Washington University in St. Louis. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at St. Louis Children’s Hospital/Washington University. Dr. Dean has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, authored book chapters and lectured both nationally and internationally. Dr. Dean’s clinical interests include neurocritical care, early mobilization, and ICU liberation, and quality improvement activities include the use of quality improvement to prevent hospital acquired conditions, such as unintended airway loss, central line bloodstream infection (CLABSI) and catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI); and to enhance recognition and rescue of the deteriorating patient.

Dr. Fernandez Nievas specializes in pediatric critical care medicine at Johns Hopkins All Children’s. He joined the hospital staff in 2020.He previously served as an attending physician in pediatric critical care and medical director of pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) at Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse, New York, and medical director of pediatric respiratory therapy at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse.Dr. Fernandez Nievas earned his medical degree from Facultad de Medicina, Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires in Argentina. He completed a pediatric residency at Hospital Nacional Alejandro Posadas in Buenos Aires, and later a pediatric residency at Maimonides Infants & Children’s Hospital in Brooklyn, New York, where he also served as chief resident.He completed a pediatric critical care fellowship at Hospital Italiano in Buenos Aires, a pediatric pulmonary medicine fellowship at Children’s Hospital Health Science Center/University of Winnipeg in Canada, and a pediatric critical care fellowship at Yale New Haven Hospital in Connecticut.He holds a Master of Public Administration from Maxwell School at Syracuse University. He is a Certified Physician Executive (CPE), a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and completed a chief quality officer development program at the Institute for Health Improvement.His clinical and research interests include severe asthma, ventilator support, pediatric acute respiratory distress syndrome (PARDS), sepsis, ECMO and quality improvement.
