Apopka was incorporated in 1882 and is known as the "The Indoor Foliage Capital of the World" due to its major industry of tropical plants and ferns. Located 12 miles northwest of Orlando, it has a population of more than 31,000 citizens and covers an area of 30 square miles. The city has a strong mayoral form of government. The mayor and commissioners are elected at large and serve a term of four years. The growth, management and development of the city is guided by a comprehensive plan, updated and evaluated every five years, to ensure that adopted policies meet changing development trends, needs, and goals of the city.
