The San Francisco Water Department, a division of the Department of Public Works, is a government agency that provides water service to residents of the greater San Francisco area. Along with storing, distributing and delivering water to San Francisco, the agency also structurally maintains the water distribution system within the city, which consists of 11 reservoirs, 18 pumping stations, a network of approximately 1,250 miles of pipelines and 12,000 water valves. On average, SFWD delivers approximately 80 million gallons of water a day to nearly 770,000 people within San Francisco. The agency is comprised of six sections: construction and maintenance, shops, building and grounds, engineering, materials and administration.
