Abbott Diabetes Care, located in Alameda, Calif., designs, develops and manufactures several glucose monitoring systems and test strips for use in both home and hospital settings. Among its brands are FreeStyle, FreeStyle Flash, Precision Xtra and Precision PCx. Abbott entered the blood glucose monitoring marketplace with the acquisition of MediSense in 1996. The company produces semiconductor-based laser systems, which are used to treat eye diseases in ophthalmology and skin afflictions in dermatology. The ophthalmic products include the IRIS Medical OcuLight GL/GLx green, OcuLight SL/SLx infrared, IQ 810 infrared laser photocoagulators and a selection of laser delivery devices. The dermatology products are used by dermatologists, plastic surgeons and cosmetic physicians to perform a variety of cosmetic procedures, including the treatment of vascular, pigmented, and cutaneous lesions, as well as perform laser facial treatments, treat skin diseases and remove unwanted hair. The company s products are sold in the United States through a direct sales force and internationally through a network of independent distributors into more than 100 countries.
