Abbott Diabetes Care, located in Alameda, Calif., designs, develops and manufactures several glucose monitoring systems and test strips for use in both home and hospital settings. Among its brands are FreeStyle, FreeStyle Flash, Precision Xtra and Precision PCx. Abbott entered the blood glucose monitoring marketplace with the acquisition of MediSense in 1996. In 2004, the company acquired TheraSense, a leader in developing blood glucose self-monitoring devices that require very small blood samples to deliver rapid test results. ADC is a subsidiary of Abbott Laboratories, a global health care company devoted to the discovery of pharmaceuticals and medical products, including nutritionals, devices and diagnostics.
