History

We named our school after the calabash fruit which has been used to make musical instruments in many cultures around the world for centuries. We think it serves as a good reminder that music and art can be made with anything, anywhere and at anytime. Everyone, regardless of age, background or experience should have the opportunity to find and explore their artist within. Here at Kalabash we not only offer you the tools and instruction to find your creative talents, but an opportunity to be part of a community of music makers, artists and dreamers of dreams. We believe in fostering a creative and community minded environment where students of all ages can dive into their talents and explore their artist within. Music and Art are not just forms of entertainment but they play important roles in our evolutionary development. They are essential in forming universal bonds with ourselves and others and we believe that having music and art in your daily life creates a healthy and happy

Specialties

Kalabash School of Music and the Arts provides music lessons and art classes in Bird Rock, La Jolla and the entire San Diego area. We offer music lessons for kids, teens and adults including: piano, voice, guitar, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, banjo, drums and percussion. Our music teachers are professional working artists, highly skilled in both music education and music performance. Our teachers take the student's musical interests and inspiration into consideration before developing a music lesson plan that can include a focus on classical, jazz, rock, Americana or world music. We also have classes that specialize in musical theater to prepare students for upcoming auditions. Our art department provides kids art classes as well as art lessons for teens, adults and seniors. Art students will learn different techniques using acrylic painting, oil painting, watercolors, crayons, chalk and other materials. And for those that like comic books, we offer a comic book art studio where kids and teenagers learn how to sketch and draw their favorite comic characters. Kalabash School encourages people to be creative and express themselves, so we host many music and art events such as music concerts, dance workshops, art and crafts workshops, art birthday parties, open mics and summer camps.
