The People’s Museum of Tallinn

Tallinn City Life Museum is temporarily closed until the end of 2025. Tallinn City Life Museum located in the Old Town in a medieval merchant's house with a history that reaches back to the 14th century. The permanent exhibition presents Tallinn’s history. Temporary exhibitions display fascinating stories about the town and townsmen. The cellar houses an open depository of our porcelain, faiance, historic ceramics, copper and brass, and pewter collections.

Our permanent exhibition gives an overview of the history of Estonian early photography. Estonian photographers were highly appreciated even abroad at the time. The display starts with very rare daguerreotypes, ambrotypes and ferrotypes. Ch. Borchardt, B. Lais, the brothers Kristins and H. Tiidermann were masters of great renown at the end of the 19th century. The fortification complex, with its four towers, city wall parapet and bastion passages. The museum presents an overview of how Tallinn has been defended and war has been waged through the ages, as well as the role of the fortifications during peacetime. The Kiek in de Kök tower, the Maiden’s Tower (Neitsitorn), the Stable Tower (Tallitorn), the Gate Tower (Väravatorn), the bastion passages and the Carved Stone Museum make up a complex that is over 500 meters long. It has two entrances: from the Kiek in de Kök tower (Komandandi tee 2) and Maiden Tower (Lühike jalg 9/Lossi plats 11). Whole museum is accessible from both entrances. OPENING TIMES Summer season 1. Closes 3 hours earlier on days preceding public holidays: February 23, June 22, December 23, December 31. The museum is divided in three parts that can be visited either in combination or separately. The museum can also be visited in parts: In addition to the full ticket, there is a separate ticket for visiting the towers • only, and a ticket to visit only the bastion passages and the Carved Stone Museum. • The Bastion passages can be visited on your own, independently, without a special tour.
