Wyoming State Government
The Wyoming State Forestry Division in Newcastle, WY is responsible for managing state trust lands, fire management, and community assistance projects. They utilize an inmate crew from the Wyoming Department of Corrections to carry out these tasks, including forestry management activities, fire management activities, and community assistance projects.
With a Program Manager, Module Leader, and seven Correctional Forestry Crew Supervisors, the Forestry Conservation Program works year-round to complete project work assigned, such as pre-commercial thinning, timber stand improvement, fuel reduction, tree planting, and wildlife habitat improvement. They also provide trained inmate crew members as a wildland fire resource, known as the Wyoming Smokebusters, available for fire assistance throughout Wyoming and the Black Hills region. Additionally, they offer community assistance projects to local, state, and federal government agencies that are of public benefit and do not compete with private enterprises.
