Midwest Oil Refinery, located in Laramie, Wyoming, has a rich history dating back to 1917 when a large oil deposit was discovered southwest of Rock River. The refinery officially opened in 1920 and quickly became known as Laramie's Greatest Industry.
After ceasing operations in 1932, the property saw various uses, including a failed attempt at processing yttrium in the 1950s. By the 1980s, the site was under investigation for groundwater and soil contamination, marking a new chapter in the refinery's complex legacy.
