Honor Farm
The Wyoming State Honor Farm in Riverton, Wyoming, established in 1931, is a 176-bed minimum-security prison for male felony offenders. It is operated by the Wyoming Department of Corrections and is home to the oldest horse program in the United States prison system, started in 1988. The Honor Farm's Wild Horse Training Program uses wild horses gathered off the open range to assist inmates in developing new job skills, improving their social and daily living habits, and ultimately aiding in their rehabilitation.
The program has proven to be successful in inmate rehabilitation, as working with wild horses teaches inmates the values of honesty, respect, trust, patience, and teamwork. Inmates learn that even an animal as powerful as a wild horse responds positively to these qualities. Released inmates who have participated in the program have a higher rate of success in reintegrating into society. The Wyoming State Honor Farm's wild horse program is a unique and effective approach to inmate rehabilitation.
