We are known as the Energy Capital of the Nation – it’s our identity and foundation. Campbell County is a 4,700 square mile rectangle of primarily grasslands over extensive sub-bituminous coal deposits, some of which were so close to the surface that early settlers could dig their own coal. Today, Wyoming accounts for around 33 percent of all US coal production, but the true value of Campbell County coal is in its unusually low sulfur content, which results in reduced emissions and a cleaner form of energy. Schedule a coal mine tour to learn how energy produced in Gillette trickles across the country. You’ll see spectacular machines work and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of the energy industry in Wyoming’s economy. And what is perhaps most impressive and surprising to visitors is the extensive reclamation processes that are taken to restore the land back to Wyoming purity. After all, this is home for these workers. Tours operate in summer months only.
