Mary Schmitt, the owner of Cayuse, started buying and selling western antiques in 1989, mostly as therapy toward an unrewarding corporate job in high-tech marketing. It quickly turned into a full-time occupation when Mary made the decision to leave the corporate world. She relocated to Jackson Hole in 1997 and opened the gallery on North Glenwood Street. The name Cayuse was fitting: it was a name given by French Trappers to a group of Native Americans living in present day eastern Washington. It would have been spelled Cailloux (
