Witt's Piggly Wiggly

Piggly Wiggly is part of the Piggly Wiggly grocery store chain and is owned by Food Giant, a supermarket chain owned by Houchens Industries in various Southern and Midwestern states. Piggly Wiggly, founded in Memphis, Tenn., in 1916, is America's first true self-service grocery store and was unlike any other grocery store of that time. Piggly Wiggly prospered as franchiser for the hundreds of independently owned grocery stores franchised to operate under the Piggly Wiggly name. Piggly Wiggly was the first to provide checkout stands, price mark every item in the store, give shoppers more through high-volume/low-profit margin retailing and franchise independent grocers to operate under the self-service method of food merchandising. There are more than 600 Piggly Wiggly stores servicing communities in 16 states and are located primarily throughout the Southeast and as far north as Wisconsin. The company issues Piggly Wiggly franchises to qualified independent grocery retailers.
