History

Since Washington Island is a Scandinavian community and one of the oldest lcelandic settlements the name Kaupstadur comes from Iceland. That means market place or buying place. Every town in Iceland has one. Sixty years ago when we opened, Items from Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Denmark and Finland along with Washington lsland and Door County items were sold. Books, cards linens, wearables, glassware, toys, and products of local artists are the base of products offered. A warm welcome with good conversation abounds. The Museum Room returned for this Anniversary year. A seal skin covered trunk brought from Iceland in the 1870's, two chairs made by Thorstein Veblen for his Island home, and the sign Adalbol from the building the original Icelanders coming to the lsland lived in are a part of the collection in the museum. This shop is a very special part of a trip to Washington Island.

Specialties

This is our 60th Anniversary selling Scandinavian gifts, books, greeting cards, and special Island and Door County items. A fun friendly atmosphere to all who come. Like a trip to Scandinavia. In honor of our 60th season the museum room which existed for the first 35 years is back. We are an outlet for Friends of Rock Island merchandise. The amazing art of Renee Glos-Block is available on chairs, stools, rocking horses, signs and more. Kari Anderson prints, cards, posters, and fused glass art are featured. Siry, my kind and loving lab/shepherd mix greets folks as they enter.

I liked this little shop a lot. Although we nearly drove right by it without noticing it. Tons of Scandinavian items and friendly service.

This tiny little shop was jam-packed with stuff! A lot of Scandinavian items, lots of greeting cards, and a bunch of other whimsical items tossed in to boot. Nothing really caught my eye,...
