The Sandstone Visitor Center, located just north of the I-64 and State Route 20 interchange, serves as a gateway to the southern portion of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Opened in the fall of 2003, this 9,800 square foot facility features sustainable design concepts focused on energy efficiency and resource conservation while offering visitors engaging educational experiences about the natural and cultural history of the New River and its watershed.
The surrounding area of the visitor center is maintained as a native landscape, featuring local species and habitats that support wildlife, including monarch butterflies.
