The Oakwood Mine Complex, established by the White Oak Fuel Company in 1902, played a significant role in the coal industry of West Virginia. The mine tragically witnessed the loss of 21 miners in a gas explosion in 1915 and operated until its closure in 1965, reaching peak output of over 515,000 tons in 1940.

After the absorption of White Oak Fuel by the New River Company in 1936, the site underwent several changes, including the upgrade of its original wooden tipple to a multi-story steel structure. Today, the remnants of the complex, particularly the old company store, serve as a historical reminder of the region's mining heritage amidst ongoing land rehabilitation efforts.
