When HMA opened to the public on November 9, 1952, the permanent collection consisted of fewer than 1,000 objects, the single building had four gallery spaces, the educational outreach programs reached the handful of schools in nearby neighborhoods, and the surrounding 52 acres were wild forest. After more than 70 years of service, HMA now maintains the largest and finest collection of art in the state with over 17,000 objects in the permanent collection. The facility includes ten exhibition spaces, an education gallery, an art reference library, an auditorium, several outdoor sculptures, five studio workshops, and a conservatory. Our educational outreach initiatives impact thousands of students in the counties surrounding HMA each year. The forest has been transformed into a series of hiking trails and a fully accessible sensory trail. Today, HMA continues to grow, change, and adapt as we provide unique opportunities for artists, students, and tourists to discover, learn, and create.
