The Oakwood Mine Complex, established by the White Oak Fuel Company in 1902, became a significant site in West Virginia's mining history. Notably, in 1915, a tragic explosion claimed the lives of 21 miners, prompting subsequent upgrades to the mining infrastructure.

After being absorbed by the New River Company in 1936, the mine reached its peak output of 515,936 tons in 1940 before ceasing operations in 1965. Today, the remnants of the complex serve as a poignant reminder of the region's industrial past, with the old company store standing as the last vestige of the once-thriving site.
