Streets and Traffic Division of the Public Works Department of the city of Yakima in Washington is responsible for the maintenance, operation and traffic engineering for the city streets. Its street maintenance operations include chip seal application, bituminous surface treatment over unpaved streets, patching of potholes, application of liquid anti-icing materials on main roads in winter and snow removal. Additionally, it undertakes annual maintenance programs, such wheel path grinding and patching, crack sealing and seal coating, and maintaining street lights, signals and signs. Its traffic engineering services include preparation of transportation plans, global positioning system travel speed and traffic volume studies, signal optimization projects and improvements in neighborhood traffic management programs.
