The Washington State Department of Transportation is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the state highway system. It operates a finance and administration division that handles the management of engineering publications, forms and materials. The department works to preserve more than 7,000 center line miles of highways and over 3,000 bridges and ramps. The Washington State Department of Transportation administers a planning program that provides technical resources and works with airports, communities, planning organizations and local decision makers. It conducts various aviation education and outreach programs that are designed to promote the development of the aviation industry. The department also provides drivers and business licenses and vehicle and boat registration services. The department additionally supports the Airport Aid Grant Program, which provides financial assistance to public airports.
