SMELTS is a non-profit organization based in Bellingham, Washington and Plymouth, Massachusetts, dedicated to developing innovative technologies to reduce harmful interactions between humans and marine life. Led by Founder and Executive Director Captain Richard Riels, the team at SMELTS focuses on creating tools and solutions to prevent entanglements of large whales, pinnipeds, sea turtles, and basking sharks in fishing gear.

With a mission to educate communities on environmental stewardship and the importance of ocean conservation, SMELTS conducts research, prototypes, and tests devices to minimize the impact of human activities on sensitive marine species. Co-Founder Ann Marie Riels and Director of East Coast Operations Kevin Rand are key members of the team, working towards the organization's goal of promoting sustainable practices and protecting at-risk marine wildlife.
