History

First established in 1891, The Seattle Public Library (SPL) provides library services to the people of Seattle. After a fire destroyed the original location in 1901, Andrew Carnegie funded the first permanent public library building in downtown Seattle. Today, the Central Library sits at the same location, occupying a full city block. 26 branches serve the neighborhoods of Seattle as vibrant community hubs, where people come to use Library resources, access the internet, attend meetings and connect with their community. SPL also offers a wide array of digital media and resources on our website

Specialties

The Seattle Public Library (SPL) is an award-winning public library system with 27 locations within the city of Seattle, including the iconic Central Library. SPL's mission is to bring people, information and ideas together to enrich lives and build community. SPL offers free programs for kids and teens, as well as programs and services for all ages, including: technology classes, job search help, English and citizenship classes, small business resources and arts programs. With a free Library card, SPL patrons can check out books and other media, including digital downloads and streaming media
