The Rev. H.D. Brown and his wife, Libbie Beach Brown, founded the Children's Home Society of Washington in 1896. The agency was the first in the state to place children in adoptive and foster homes. Throughout the years, it has placed more than 30,000 children in adoptive homes. Volunteer leadership was very active in early child welfare issues, which helped craft the first child labor laws and establish a child welfare system in Washington. The Children s Home Society of Washington is the oldest statewide, private, nonprofit organization for children and families.
