He had graduated from Oregon State University with a degree in political science and needed to earn money before attending law school. His dad's agency represented American Income Life, and he suggested Rick join the team. Recalls Rick, "I started as an Agent and became a General Agent while becoming one of the top Public Relations people in AIL. I earned a promotion to Master General Agent and then another to State General Agent when I was only 23 years old. I opened the first Canadian office in American Income Life, and I was the first SGA whose agency produced 25 million dollars in one year. Rick has shared his talent with AIL for 29 years. "I sold a program to a young 21-year-old couple," recalls Rick. "A week later I got a call from the wife letting me know her husband had passed away. She was calling to collect on his $1,000 policy. But after checking the paperwork, I was able to inform her that he didn't have a $1,000 policy; he had a $100,000 policy. That's when I knew this career was first and foremost about helping working families." Rick is a family man, both at home and on the job. He says, "I love to spend time with my wife and four children, as well as my professional Altig family. I'm always trying to do more for others than what I would have them do for me." That attitude carries over to Rick's charitable endeavors. He says, "Yes, giving is the best part of life, and we give a major part of our income to community based organizations that help those in need."
