History

First established in 1891, The Seattle Public Library (SPL) provides library services to the people of Seattle. After a fire destroyed the original location in 1901, Andrew Carnegie funded the first permanent public library building in downtown Seattle. Today, the Central Library sits at the same location, occupying a full city block. 26 branches serve the neighborhoods of Seattle as vibrant community hubs, where people come to use Library resources, access the internet, attend meetings and connect with their community. SPL also offers a wide array of digital media and resources on our website
