St. Martin de Porres Shelter provides safe night shelter facilities for homeless men aged 50 and older. The shelter opened in 1984 in response to the need for an emergency shelter for elderly men who are vulnerable to the weather, street predators and illness. Its services include food, clothing, day respite, 24-hour care for the ill and injured, including transportation to and from medical appointments, medical care, restroom, shower and laundry facilities, reading and chapel rooms, haircuts, and housing and employment assistance. Its resource coordinator offers the men guidance in the housing and job application processes, and counsels them in dealing with Social Security, the Veterans affairs, and other governmental agencies.
