The Waynesboro Redevelopment and Housing Authority opened its first public housing development of 61 units in 1974. Today, it owns and manages more than one 180 housing units on over five sites throughout the city of Waynesboro, Va. The authority s supportive housing program promotes the development of housing and supportive services to assist homeless individuals with disabilities in their transition from living on the streets and in shelters to achieving permanent housing and maximum self-sufficiency. Its indoor plumbing and rehabilitation loan program provides no-interest loans to low-income homeowners whose dwellings lack functional indoor plumbing. The authority also administers the YouthBuild program, which provides work and learning opportunities to educationally and economically disadvantaged young adults who have dropped out of school. The Waynesboro Redevelopment and Housing Authority also offers homeownership education, child care and general education development instruction.
