Roanoke Parks and Recreation is home to the iconic Roanoke Star, a regional landmark and popular tourist destination located atop Mill Mountain Park. Originally constructed as a seasonal Christmas decoration in 1949, the Roanoke Star has since become a permanent fixture in the city's skyline, standing at 1,045 feet above Roanoke.
Designed and built by Roy C. Kinsey and his sons, the Roanoke Star consists of three stars illuminated by 2,000 feet of neon tubes. Over the years, the star's colors have been changed to commemorate significant events, reflecting the community's spirit and resilience.
