Dr. Welch earned his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of Health Science and pursued his residency and fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He completed his Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant fellowship at the University of Virginia. A Marine Corps infantryman right out of high school, he served in the first Gulf War. He left the Marines for college, went to medical school, joined the Army and culminated his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel and cardiologist.
