Operational since 1896, the Volunteers of America is a nonprofit, faith-based organization that coordinates various human service programs. Its programs include housing and health care services. The organization serves more than 2 million people that include at-risk youths, elderly citizens, abused and neglected children, and disabled and homeless individuals in over 400 communities throughout the United States. It creates and manages housing programs that include support services and activities for residents. It promotes residential and outpatient treatment for alcohol and drug addicts. The organization additionally offers rehabilitative, counseling and employment services for people in crisis.

Way Station is a nonprofit organization that provides behavioral health and employment services to children, adolescents, adults and families. With more than 400 employees, the organization serves over 7,000 individuals. Its National Education Center offers programmatic consultation in partnership with George Washington University Center for health policy research to nearly 200 government and private disability agencies. Founded in 1978, Way Station provides child and adolescent, community employment, day psychiatric rehabilitation and detention center mental health programs. The organization offers fieldwork training to advanced degree human service students throughout the United States through formal affiliations with more than 85 colleges and universities. It is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).
