Goochland County is strategically located in central Virginia, west of the state capitol of Richmond, east of Charlottesville, and south of Washington, D.C. The county is governed by a five-member board of supervisors headquartered in Goochland, Va., and its daily operations are overseen by a county administrator. The county has adopted a comprehensive plan and zoning ordinances. The county s full- and part-time person sheriff s department is supported by the state police assigned to the area. It also has a fire and rescue department that comprises more than 400 volunteer personnel. Goochland County was formed in 1727and named after Sir William Gooch, lieutenant governor of the Virginia Colony from 1727 to 1749.
